[08-14-2000] saintly : I would probably take the C++ course. If you learn it, Java is mostly just a cut-down version of C++ and it would be easy to learn Java later. C++ would let you write faster, better and more efficient programs that you can in Java, but you just cannot run them the same on Macintosh and PC. If you want to write programs to run on many different operating systems (Windows, UNIX, Macintosh) at the same time without being changed, then of course take Java now.
I do not think Java has been what they said it would be. It is not as stable as C++, it runs much more slowly and the graphics packages are poor. I do not see it being used as widely in the future unless the company can make some big changes in the way it is packaged and written.
Hope that helps.
